December 10, 2009 at 11:02 am (Discount Shopping, Dresses For Pear Shaped Women, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

When it comes to shopping and friendships, I do not discriminate. Any person or store stands a chance as ultimately, the source will open my world in ways I have never previously imagined. Ann Taylor is now worthy of my loyalty as how can I resist a 30% discount off an entire purchase. You can benefit from this too by entering the code “WINTER” until December 13. Then you can stock up on some great items not only for yourself, but for sharing the joy this season.

This offerings include tons of contemporary styled ruffled sweaters and tops that perfectly capitalize on the season’s must have design point. My choice is this supple-soft cashmere sweater with small, jeweled button details ($170):

The colors available range from pastels such as “shoreline” and to the neutral end of the spectrum featuring winter white, heather gray and black. This item would make an excellent layering piece that can be worn throughout the entire season and a bold bracelet such as the Heavy Metal from Hurricane by Jane L.L.C. would be the icing on the cake. The entire combination would draw the eye upward to visually accentuate our slim, Pear Shapely torsos.

Perhaps you finally got an invite to the must-have holiday event of the season and need the perfect little black dress to wear. Then this gorgeous silk taffeta ($215) will do wonders:

This online exclusive is the perfect “LBD” for pear shaped women for a plethora of reasons:

  • Black: Say no more!
  • V-Neck: Perfect for showing off decolletage and drawing the eye up
  • Skirt: Fuller to accommodate our swaying hips

If you are chilly, just throw on the previously mentioned cashmere sweater or a wrap you may have floating around and pair it with some exquisite jewelry from Hurricane by Jane.  The pieces featuring iridescent moonstones will look just divine. Whether you want to keep it simple and just adorn a great pair of earrings like the Moony Dusters ($45):

Or want to also drape your neck with the coordinating Ring of Fire necklace ($57), I’ve got you covered.

Combined, the entire look is simple, elegant and timeless, but all the pieces are strong enough to stand on their own well into 2010. Don’t forget, Hurricane by Jane is offering free standard shipping for the holiday season, so get your order in now to take advantage of the beautiful handcrafted jewelry and the savings.

How to Wear a Tunic: Advice for Pear Shaped Figures

November 12, 2009 at 11:19 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fitness Tips) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I’ve always envied women who can slip on a tunic, wear it as a mini dress and show off their great gams. Alas, I am not one of those ladies as my legs are the last feature I am willing to display in a public setting.

But that does not stop my love for the garb and my passion for finding options that will flatter my figure. By  the definition on Dictionary.com a tunic is a “a woman’s upper garment, either loose or close-fitting and extending over the skirt to the hips or below.” Ultimately the cut of the garment plays against our natural shape as it may get stuck on our hips and not show our delicate waistlines unless it is accessorized and styled properly.

Luckily there are ways to tweak the top that will allow us to still don a tunic stylishly. The ingredients for this style recipe include a tunic, leggings and a great, bold belt. Are you having trouble picturing this look? Let me make it simple. For the tunic you can choose any color, pattern or embellishment you want as long as the main details appear on your upper torso, not on your hips. This top from Black Hearts Brigade ($54 Bluefly.com) will do the trick:

Black Hearts Brigade Tunic $54: Bluefly.com

The shape is boxy, but the cut is full enough to cover our shapely rears and accommodate all our curves while channelling a “rocker” vibe.

Step number two for the ensemble is pair it with leggings. Newport-News has tons of options available from boot leg to skinny and as long as you don black and choose a full length style, either cut will have a slimming effect. The ones that are featured have the added benefit of the retailer’s “Shape FX” line as the leggings have been built for support, control and slimming your rump.

Shape fx® Push-up legging, $19-$21: Newport-News.com

A great belt will provide the final detail, but the key is getting a large enough sized accessory so it can  be worn at your hips, not at your waist. Although they are primarily known for their jeans, Lucky Brand has awesome accessories and this Ashe Belt ($69) would complete the outfit:

Ashe Belt, $69: Lucky Brand Jeans

If you choose to wear this belt at the waist, the only thing you would succeed in doing is drawing attention to your pear shaped figure. Don’t believe me? Michelle Obama recently made a mistake we can all learn by:

Michelle Obama Can’t Always Be Perfect

By moving the belt down a couple of inches, you can blouse the top, thus adding some bulk onto the narrowest part of our bodies. Plus the slimming effect of the black leggings will allow us to best mimic the style of the skinny girls, but customized for a pear shaped figure. Whether you pair this outfit with sandals in the summer or boots in the winter, you now have the inside scoop on how to wear a tunic.

Of course no look would be complete without an plug for Hurricane by Jane Jewelry and would recommended the Duotastic Necklace because the piece will add a splash of gold that would compliment the olive tone of the shirt while tying in the silver buckle of the belt:

Stripes for Pear Shaped Bodies

October 21, 2009 at 9:30 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

By this time, we all know that dressing our pear shaped body is a labor of love and that sometimes good old-fashioned “smoke and mirror” techniques can help give us the added oomph that we crave.

Striped  tops accented by great jewelry are one of the tricks of the trade as the combination will give the illusion that our upper torso is broader then our bottom. Pairing a great sweater or shirt with a pair of dark denim jeans, black pants or even a solid pencil skirt are all some great ways to drape your Pear Shapely figure. Plus complimenting the stripes with the Coco Chanel Inspired Pearl Before Swine Necklace ($86) from Hurricane by Jane will make the look completely yours:

Pearl Before Swine Necklace: Hurricane by Jane L.L.C.

As always, Bluefly.com has options and this Cashmere Striped Bubble Sweater ($123.99) will do the trick:

Autumn Cashmere Bubble Stripe Sweater: Bluefly.com

The ribbed waistband, will allow the garment to sit right above your hips, accentuating your whittled middle, the bubble effect will add a slightly fuller silhouette to your slim top portion, the stripes will work their magic and the cashmere will add the necessary “yummy” factor.

Menswear is currently a huge trend and I always keep some staples in my wardrobe. With a Striped Cashmere Sweater Vest ($139) available on Shopbop.com we can also balance our figures:

Splendid, French Stripe Cashmere Vest: Bluefly.com

Depending on your mood you can just add a layering t or a white button down. Mix and match with all the aforementioned bottoms, and you will be good to go. The illusion is the same, it is just another twist on the look.

When trying something new,  breaking the $100 range may not  be a realistic goal. Never fear as the Gap always has affordable options. I’m totally digging this Striped Crew Neck Sweater ($44.50):

Striped Crew Neck Sweater: The Gap

Out of all the lined toppers out there, this shirt will provide the best optical illusion for balancing out your figure courtesy of all the white space around your shoulders and chest (our two most narrow points).

From bargain retailers like Forever 21 to designer discounter happy places like Loehmann’s stripes are plentiful, flattering and affordable. Feel free to share your favorite finds with me, as I love hearing about a good shopping score!

This gorgeous silk tiered top ($70) from Banana Republic:

Silk Tiered Top $70: Banana Republic

Why it works: Ruffle detail is huge this season and it provides visual interest for drawing the viewers eye upwards thus adding some balance. The petite sizing will ensure that there is not too much extra fabric to prevent unnecessary bulky fabric at the waist. Plus, V-necks are flattering on everyone and your slender neck and arms will be the center of attention especially when the top is paired with the Silver Triple Strand Necklace from my collection:

Silver Triple Strand Necklace: Hurricane by Jane

Another great item that can be purchased to build a complete look using the aforementioned coupon code are some winter white sailor pants ($59.50) from the Gap:

Sailor Pants: The Gap

Just make sure to tuck in the silk top from above to show off your defined waist! Finally, this ensemble needs a top layering piece so both tone down the color hues and to provide some insulation from the cold on top. My number one pick would be a great fitted blazer like this feminine tuxedo ($98) also from the Gap:

Tuxedo Jacket: The Gap

Or for a more casual look this great merino wool drape cardigan ($90)  from Banana Republic:

There are hundreds of combinations you can pick and choose from, so make sure to use your discount wisely and iff you make a Pear Shapely combination, let me know!

Best Cardigans for Pear Shaped Gals

October 15, 2009 at 9:01 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Cardigan sweaters rock! For years I have sworn by these must have layering pieces because of the versatility and ease of wear. This year the fashion industry has finally caught up with my taste and have been promoting these garments as the addition to purchase for your fall wardrobe.

Pear Shapely lasses looking to add some selections to their wardrobes will feel like a kid in a candy store! From preppy argyle finds of 100% cotton from Old Navy ($29.50):

Argyle Cardigan: Old Navy

To luxurious cashmere styles available on Shopbop.com ($295):

Cashmere Duster Cardigan: Shopbop.com

You can have it all. Regardless of how much you want to spend and the style you are interested Pear Shaped women need to think and ask themselves some questions before purchasing to ensure that they buy the right item for their needs. Questions to ponder:

  • Fabric choices: Acrylic sweaters tend to add unnecessary bulk without providing any warmth, so make sure there is something of the earth like cotton, cashmere or wool involved in your purchase
  • Allergies: Angora is a fur component from little bunnies. If you are allergic to cats and dogs make sure that this component is not in the sweater you are eyeing as you may react poorly to it in the long run
  • Fit: Like with any garment for pear shaped lasses, showing off your little middle will flatter your shape most. Cropped cardigans, longer sweaters with ribbed neck trim that will lock the sweater above your waist or duster duds that have a belt feature will keep you warm, cozy and stylish.
  • Length: Make sure the sweater you are eyeing does not fall mid thigh as it will highlight the bulkiest portion of your body. If you must get a sweater that hits that region, make sure that the item is not boxy and that there is either a built in belt or you can belt it to show off your curves

Whatever you choose, make sure the fit is right, that you can immediately picture wearing the item a number of ways and that you do not go into debt purchasing the said garb. Then with that extra cash, feel free to shop at Hurricane by Jane Jewelry and treat yourself to a little something, something like the stylish and affordable Swingtown Earrings ($32) and Necklace ($37)!

Best Trousers for Pear Shaped Gals

October 8, 2009 at 12:57 pm (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everyone knows about Express and the great fitting “Editor” pants.  They work on all body types and are especially flattering on curvy girls. There is ample room in the buttocks and thigh, the trouser leg is flattering and the slightest bit of stretch makes sure that our shape will be appropriately flattered.

Although they all look great, there are some that are completely constructed of synthetic fabric and that, at least for me, is a big no-no. Ultimately artificial fiber is not breathable and really does not offer any protection from the elements. Every season I investigate options that include cotton, and what a gem we have this time round:

Editor Pants: Express

They are stylish, fashionable and can work amazingly well with any number of pieces that are already in your wardrobe. From a tailored tuxedo top, to a muscle tank to your favorite cardigan and beaten up boots, these pants should and will be worn to death.

Shopping tip- here is a printable coupon to save you at least 25% on your entire Limited Express Purchase.

Bold, structured pants deserves an accessory of equal caliber and the Heavy Metal bracelet will do the trick:

This bracelet has been one of my best sellers since I began offering it about a month ago. It will add the perfect amount of zest to compliment your new pant ensemble.

Fall Jackets for Pear Shaped Gals

October 8, 2009 at 9:00 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Nearly everyone uses their wardrobe as their main means of expressing themselves. Whether someone drapes themselves in designer labels, vintage garb, indie fashion or the infamous khaki pant and blue top ensemble, what you choose to wear is your greatest form of expression.

The key to individual style is being 100% true to yourself, setting your own trends and dressing for you body shape including the lovely Pear Shapely. By using that basic philosophy and not being beholden to one store, designer line or even era you will surely come up with your own unique style.

One of the greatest contributors to this cause is “indie fashion” just like Hurricane by Jane Jewelry. All my pieces are handmade by me, in small batches in fine materials like sterling silver, freshwater pearls and other goodies. One website dedicated to the movement is Mod Cloth and they have tons of excellent fall offerings for curvy gals.

As the temperatures continue to drop, finding great and flattering outwear is a necessity. Pear shapely women need to stay away from such trends as swing coats, boxy shapes or cropped jackets that have no structured shape at the bottom. However, the world of Mod Cloth is filled with a full array of structured coats perfect for pear shaped women that will keep you cozy.

The Madison Jacket ($107.99) is one such delicacy:

Madison Jacket: Tulle

Herringbone never goes out of style and with the belted waist and amble coverage for our bottoms, Pear Shapely ladies can easily (and affordably) participate in the trend. The Mobile Earrings would pick up the subtle detail of the gold belt closure on the jacket:

Mobile Earrings: Hurricane by Jane

Perhaps you are itching to get a great plaid piece into your Pear Shapely wardrobe, then Union of Plaid jacket  ($139.99) would do the trick nicely:

Union of Plaid: Mod Cloth

Cinched waist, check! Long and loose enough to provide ample hip coverage, check! Epaulets detail to draw the eye of the viewer to your top and balance out the overall figure effect, major check-a-rooni! Paired with the  earrings in silver and gold, you will master the look!

Rain Earrings: Hurricane by Jane

Seriously, Mod Cloth had dozens of styles perfect for fantastic Autumn layering and many of the offerings are well under $200. If you are in the market for a layering piece, do yourself a favor and check this site out for yourself.

Best Blazers for Pear Shaped Lasses

October 7, 2009 at 5:20 pm (Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Hello fellow curvy girls! Sorry I’ve been off the beaten pear path for the past couple of days, but since I am a responsible, law abiding citizen who answered the call of serving my country in the form of jury duty, it is legally my number one responsibility. Thankfully the LA municipal has free wireless internet and I have a laptop, so you cannot keep a good, Pear Shapely woman down for too long (unless that is exactly what she wants).

Anyway, around LA county and the entire country, the air is chilling and fall fashion is plentiful. Layers are the key to surviving cooler nights, staying fashion savvy and adorable blazers are just the thing wear.  Pear Shapely ladies need to be extremely careful in the blazer selection process to avoid fashion mayhem.

Regardless of the color, fabric and price point of your blazer there are several fitting that Pear Shapely ladies need to pay attention too:

  • Avoid boxy shapes-look for a blazer with a more feminine cut that cuts in at the waist to accentuate your best feature, your curves
  • Shoulder structure-after the linebacker look went out in the 80’s, the words “shoulder pads” were never uttered with the same intent however, a slight hint of padding will help balance your upper torso with your hips
  • Length-almost any length blazer can work as long as the other two features are part of the garment

For example, consider this Free People plaid blazer on Bluefly.com ($89):

Plaid Blazer: Free People

Although there are no shoulder pads in the construction, the ruffle detail combined with the plaid will help balance out your top compared with your bottom and the single button closure will provide the appropriate waist detail.

Depending on your office for work you can pair the garment dark denim jeans and a simple solid top of your choice. If you work in a more creative environment a straight black skirt just above the knee combined with solid black tights and engineer boots would provide an awesome twist.

To top it all off , a bit of bling from Hurricane by Jane L.L.C. Since the jacket makes a bold enough statement on it’s own the simplicity of the Circle Choker ($42) in sterling silver would do the trick and you can feel free to pair it with the stud earrings of your choice:

Circle Choker Sterling Silver: Hurricane by Jane Jewelry

Are you coveting a particular blazer? If so, feel free to let me know all about as us curvy gals truly need to stick together.

Hot Top for Pear Shaped Figures

October 5, 2009 at 10:15 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Regardless of the designer label, only natural fibers shall ever grace my body. For me, cotton, silk and fine cashmere are the key elements on which my entire wardrobe are built as frankly, my skin gets irritated by everything else. That is why I have been a fan of LA Designer Hale Bob for years. The line features fantastic prints that are reminiscent of Pucci and many of tops and dresses are constructed of  a silk  base.

Pear shaped women can certainly benefit from having a few Hale Bob tops in their wardrobes as many of them feature v-neck and cinch detail that will highlight a small ribcage while covering our hips. The key to making this work look for Pear Shapely ladies is pair a flowing top with skinny jeans, that will provide the most balance to the equation.

If you are interested in channelling your inner Bohemian love child, then there are literally hundreds of tops to choose from. However the cut and color combinations of the stretch silk Multi Bohemian Chic V-Neck Top would look amazing with a pair of dark, skinny jeans.

Mulit Bohemian Chic V-Neck Top

The top is currently on sale for $150 making it a bit more appealing then other offerings on the site and by adding a simple long sleeve black layering t-shirt underneath, the item can be worn through the fall.

Shopping Tip-Those ladies lucky enough to live in LA should stop by Loehmans as they are a major seller of Hale Bob overstock. Tuesday and Thursdays are when new arrivals are put on the floor at both the Burbank and Los Angeles locations and I have several tops that originally retailed at over $200 in the $50-$60 range.

Since the main focus of this look would be on the wildly patterned top, simple jewelry would at the finishing touches. My recommendation would be the Waterfall Necklace ($53) in sterling silver by Hurricane by Jane Jewelry.

Waterfall Necklace: Hurricane by Jane

The necklace is light and airy and the fine change dangles will certainly compliment the plunging V-neck and the skin that you choose to show.

The finely crafted Crystal Ship Earrings ($41) in Sterling silver would further add to the look.

Crystal Ship Earrings Silver: Hurricane by Jane

To add the final bit of bling and fully integrate all the pieces the Crystal Persuasion Bracelet ($49) in sterling silver will seal the deal.

Of course if you are interested in purchasing all three pieces together, contact me directly through my ETSY boutique and I’ll work out a deal just for you.
