If you are at all like me, you have been waiting ever so patiently for retailers to start discounting to help make their final numbers for 2009. That time is now and fully immersing yourself into the world of discount shopping will help you reap the rewards of fashion finds, perfect for holiday dressing. Bluefly.com is taking an additional 15% off of every item currently on the site and offering free shipping as well.
As usual, the options for great clothing is nearly limitless, but of course my focus is finding options that will compliment pear shaped body types. My first choice is this beautiful graphic silk dress from Hale Bob (today’s price is $165.75).
By pairing this sheath with solid black tights and black boots, pear shaped gals will help contribute to the optical illusion of an elongated figure, slimmer legs and a larger upper torso thanks to the bold patter. The best feature of this dress is the “obi wrap belt along empire waist with leather center” right beneath a plunging v-neck. The belt feature will highlight the narrow waist typically associated with our luscious body shapes while the empty space left by the neckline should be filled with a great piece of Hurricane by Jane Jewelry such as the asymmetrically constructed Lucky Charms Necklace ($94):
Simple earrings and maybe a bold, black, acrylic bangle-bracelet would be the final pieces needed for fully styling this look.
Although this Nanette Lepore blazer would also work with the look , this is great National Velvet jacket ($157.25) is a great centerpiece for any outfit including jeans and pencil skirts:
Velvet is always the lux fabric for the colder months, and since winter has only just begun, you will have plenty of time to get some wear out of this wrapper.
Of course the site has every type of fashion item conceivable and I have only selected 2 great options from a list of thousands. This sale is a limited time offer that is not being heavily promoted on the web. So don’t waste any time thanking me when there are divine and fashionable bargains to be had.
The wonderful thing about accessory shopping is regardless of your body shape or size, you can always find something that works just perfectly. One such item is a great tote bag and Kenneth Cole has some amazing options. Best part about it, 40% discounts and free shipping thanks to the code “SHIPIT.”
Metallics are considered a contemporary neutral, so updating your look with a gold, leather tote has never been easier with the “tote of the town” ($199) option:
The 40% discount will be applied upon check out making this an affordable luxury at around $120. Whether you buy this brilliantly sculpted purse for yourself or as a gift, it is sure to be used day in and day out.
Time for a little Mad Libs, Pear Shapely style: Baby it’s (adjective) outside! Regardless of where you live, there are plenty of descriptive words that can for the current weather systems across the nation. Surely you will encounter some of them during your day-to-day activity and doing so cozily and stylishly will help you get through whatever system is in place and my favorite discount retailer, Loehmann’s is making it a bit easier.
My happy place just announced that starting today their, coat sale begins with up to 75% off of department store prices. In Loehmann’s carry true designer names like Elie Tahari, LeRok, Hale Bob, Dolce & Gabbana and so much more. However, until you get into the store, you will not know what designer wares are offered this week. So why wait? If you are cold, damn and not looking so cute, spruce up your wardrobe with the cashmere, wool, leather or down coat of your dreams.
Regardless of the shoe brands that have come into vogue, there are certain lines that will always have a place in my closet and on my feet. Steel toe Dr. Maartens (I still have the same pair from high school), Frye boots and Chuck Taylor Converse are part of the mix.
When I first discovered that Converse were doing a private label line for Target I was thrilled, knowing that my bargain sneakers have become even more affordable. Well now, they are super duper affordable as Target is taking an additional 20% off the entire Converse One Star shoe line. If you are looking a a pair of comfy shoes for sporting during weekend errands, long walks on the beach or even for just lounging around the house, these are it.
The shoes are nearly identical in construction with the big differences being the color selection and the predominant star featured on the shoe. But if you want to kick it old school on a budget, then at less then $30 a pair, it is worth the trial and error to see if they will work for you.
This offer is too good to keep to myself! Currently Lucky Brand is offering a 30% discount off of all purchases made during December 3- December 13. This sale is by invitation only to members of their email community. If you are interested in receiving a custom discount code you need to subscribe to their email database. Once in the system, according to the denim masters you will enjoy certain “benefits” such as:
- Save time – store shipping and billing information to checkout in as few as 2 steps

Ultimately the goal of the season is to shop for others, but while you are at it, taking advantage and buying a great pair of jeans for your pear shaped figure may be in order. Whether you drape your pear shaped curves in the sleek styling of the Sweet-n-Lows or want to go for a more relaxed fit courtesy of the Classic Riders, your best bet is going to a store and trying on a pair to find your favorites. Don’t wait and happy shopping!
During the hey-dey of designer denim, Brooke Shields proclaimed that “nothing will come between me and my Calvins.”:
Even though I tried to channel her passion, the designer prices kept me far away from the jean line. However, today may be different as the retailer has extended their big sale to last one more day. That day is now and mere mortals can now save 30%-50% off of everything on the Calvin Klein Site.
With the holiday season kicking off in the next couple of days, my thoughts have turned towards rhinestones, sequins and metallic thread and this adorable cropped metallic cardigan sweater on sale for $47.60 would make an excellent addition to my collection:
This cardigan (please note my refusal to call it a “cardi”) can serve double duty. Not only can it be used as a layering piece over a long sleeved t shirt and jeans combo but it will be a perfect wrap for more elegant holiday attire. Either way, the sweater will add a bit of girth to your upper torso perfect for creating balance for a pear shaped figure.
Another piece that will provide visual interest on your fine upper body is this gorgeously sparkling sequined vest ($68.60):
Personally I would skip the graphic shirt promoting the line as this vest is almost festive enough to stand on its own. Of course your ensemble would be further enhanced by mixing in some jewelry by Hurricane by Jane and my choice for a contemporary accent would be the Moon of Mars Necklace ($77):
Silver and gold intertwine so you can mix and match your favorite holiday jewels and totally pull together the look. If you are interested in this piece from my collection or any other item from Hurricane by Jane L.L.C. feel free to contact me directly at HurricanebyJane@gmail.com and you will not be denied.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, for my pear shaped figure there is nothing like the Sweet-n-Low jeans from Lucky Brand to adorn my curves. Now until November 15, there are three styles of the cut on sale for 40% off the retail price.
My favorite are the dark wash of the Knox option:
The retail price starts at $79.50 but with a 40% discount these jeans becoming an astoundingly low $47.70. Shipping and sales tax will apply.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines as starting November 12 for a four day period the “Gap” mothership is having their annual Give and Get discount promotion featuring 30% off your entire order (either in store or on line). Not only will you save some cash on any items purchased at the Gap, Gap Outlet, Banana Republic, Banana Republic Factory Stores and Old Navy, but the company will contribute 5% of your expenditures to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
With cooler temperatures upon us and the holiday season rearing its ugly (yet festive) head, this discount could not come at a better time. Whether you want to stock up on striped tops for your pear shaped figure , sailor pants, great affordable cardigans or find some new treasures perfect for adorning your goddess like curves, the bargains will be hard to resist.
Some new faves of mine include the must have styling detail of the season, ruffles. Many ladies may be intimidated from participating in this hot trend, but regardless of your age, size or shape as long as it is done correctly, you can rock the house. On the higher end of spending scale, Banana Republic has this adorable ruffled cardigan ($79.50):
Constructed of 100% merino wool, the sweater comes in a variety of neutrals such as Taupe, Carob Chip, Sugar Plum, Charcoal and Black. Not only will you be kept toasty warm, but you will also keep the attention on your upper torso.
Another ruffled option include this cotton cashmere blend ruffle henley sweater from the Gap ($44.50):
This sweater comes in full array of Roy G. Biv, the fabric is super soft, features subtle ruffles and would make an excellent layering piece.
Perhaps the other options are “too rich for your blood” and your wallet, well thank goodness for Old Navy and this animal friendly ruffled Faux-leather hobo bag ($29.50):
The best thing about a great handbag and jewelry from Hurricane by Jane Jewelry is that one size fits all! Since the ruffles are the main focal point, I think some great earrings like the Moony Swingtown ($59) would compliment any of these pieces:
Since it’s humble beginnings as a local shoe store in Seattle Washington, Nordstrom has evolved into a national shopping Mecca! The retailer carries labels such as Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese, BCBG, D&G and Max & Cleo and until November 15 you can stock up on your favorites as their Half-Yearly sale is in full effect. You can choose to either shop in person or shop online at Nordstrom.com.
My thinking is that the holiday season is right around the corner and surely there will be a cocktail party or two that justifies the purchase of a new dress to drape your girly curves. There are plenty of options for pear shaped figures to choose from, but for the money these are my favorites:
The Adrianna Papell Gathered Cutaway Halter Dress ($98.90) is simply gorgeous and will be easy to wear. The port color is divine and flattering to most skin tones, the A-line skirt will accommodate fuller swaying hips while the gathered neckline, halter top will tighten accordingly while accentuating our toned upper torsos.
If you are a size 10 or 12 (the only sizes currently available), don’t bat an eye or you will miss out on this great strapless cocktail dress from Shoshanna ($212):
Shoshanna is known for constructing tops to accommodate the “girls” and hold them in place effortlessly. Chocolate is a flattering neutral, silk and cotton taffeta is a rich fabric and the sweetheart bodice and a short A-line skirt is a classic style that will last for years to come.
Perhaps you want to wrap yourself up like a holiday gift? Then the bow detail on this Ane Klein Dress will fulfill your desire:
The dress comes in both navy/midnight or ruby. The cut is classic with a surplice neck, cinched waist and a full skirt, just perfect for pear shaped figures to luxuriously adorn themselves.
If you want to take advantage of this sale and get a bargain on your holiday ensemble here are some shopping tips to take advantage of the sale:
- Keep it simple-Bejeweled, adorned or patterned dresses may be the trend, but their longevity is short lived as “hot” items become cool very quickly
- Go for quality fabrics- Regardless of the designer label, silk and cotton are much better fabric choices the poly/spandex
- Solid Colors- With a high quality, solid color garment you can wear your dress to a number of events and change the look with great accessories
- Accessories- the right handbag, shoes, wraps and jewelry will complete your look and of course this is my plug for Hurricane by Jane Jewelry.
The best pieces I have for holiday dressing are the Boogie Night Necklace and Constellation Earrings.
When I was a kid and going “back to school” was right around the corner, we would load up the family wagon and make the trip to Paramus Park Mall in New Jersey as tax free shopping was the bait. Over time, that rite of passage evolved to trips to outlet stores where we could scoop up savings.
When the trend first emerged, outlet stores were truly a unique and worth-while shopping experience. Now-a-days, many outlet stores are just facades for where manufactures can produce a lower price point line and sell lesser quality goods just in order to generate another revenue stream.
According to Consumer Reports “only one-third of survey respondents said outlet prices were substantially below sale prices at regular stores.” Author Ellen Rupel Shell’s further backs up that fact in her book, Cheap: the High Cost of Discount Culture, where she reveals that many retailers such as Coach, the Gap,and Donna Karan produce lower-quality merchandise specifically for their outlets.
That does not mean all is lost for those dedicated to discount shopping as there are plenty of affordable and adorable options to be found around the web. Right now Esprit.com there is a major “outlet” clearance sale going on where some online exclusives and earlier season overstock is on sale for up to 70% off. To qualify for free shipping you need to spend $30.
From great bolero cropped tops to flowing tunics like this gorgeous printed chiffon tunic ($14.99) there are plenty of great bargains for pear shaped bodies:
Use this retro inspired topper to dress up a pair of dark, sleek skinny jeans and you will draw the eye’s attention up and highlight your middle with the synch waist detail.
