Smoke and Mirrors the Key to Dressing a Pear Shaped Figure

November 18, 2009 at 10:18 am (Just Because, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , )

Over the past couple of months, my friends have been quite curious with my obsession with all things pear shaped. All of my posse have been quite complimentary regarding the Pear Shapely blog, but honestly have no idea why I am dedicating my time to providing fashion tips for pear shaped bodies as they do not believe I have one. At this point I would like to channel my inner Doug Henning and respond with “The hard must become habit. The habit must become easy. The easy must become beautiful.”

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve gotten together with friends and strangers who literally made me stand up and point out what makes me a pear shaped gal as they have yet to discover the curves with their naked eyes. In their minds, pear shaped women are all extremely bottom heavy and there is no disguising the fact:

Granted, this lovely lass is sticking out her grand assets to make a point. In my mind, the point is if you do not watch what you eat, are not active and do not know how to drape your figure, all pear shaped figures have the potential of going off the deep-end.

Not so long ago myy hearty buttocks and I were known for a series of “Asscapades” that included using my butt to block air hockey pucks and mooning my friends. I was carrying an extra twenty pounds all in my pedunk-a-dunk and I wore a size 10-12 on the bottom while my top needed a size 6-8. Those two different sizes where the top measurements is narrower then the hip circumference equals a pear shaped figure.

Fast forward to now, where a change in my habits have resulted in a weight loss of over 20 lbs. My bottom now is a size 6 and my top usually fits into a size 4. No matter how much weight I gain or loss, I am a tried and true pear shaped figure.

Shopping, style and clothing have always garnered my enthusiasm and my multi-tiered career in the fashion industry has allowed me to pick up professional tricks for dressing myself. In turn, I want to be considered a resource for pear shaped ladies and will continue to share my insights and unique perspective with my Pear Shapely Brethren! Hopefully you are enjoying the experience as much as I am.

How to Wear a Tunic: Advice for Pear Shaped Figures

November 12, 2009 at 11:19 am (Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fitness Tips) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I’ve always envied women who can slip on a tunic, wear it as a mini dress and show off their great gams. Alas, I am not one of those ladies as my legs are the last feature I am willing to display in a public setting.

But that does not stop my love for the garb and my passion for finding options that will flatter my figure. By  the definition on Dictionary.com a tunic is a “a woman’s upper garment, either loose or close-fitting and extending over the skirt to the hips or below.” Ultimately the cut of the garment plays against our natural shape as it may get stuck on our hips and not show our delicate waistlines unless it is accessorized and styled properly.

Luckily there are ways to tweak the top that will allow us to still don a tunic stylishly. The ingredients for this style recipe include a tunic, leggings and a great, bold belt. Are you having trouble picturing this look? Let me make it simple. For the tunic you can choose any color, pattern or embellishment you want as long as the main details appear on your upper torso, not on your hips. This top from Black Hearts Brigade ($54 Bluefly.com) will do the trick:

Black Hearts Brigade Tunic $54: Bluefly.com

The shape is boxy, but the cut is full enough to cover our shapely rears and accommodate all our curves while channelling a “rocker” vibe.

Step number two for the ensemble is pair it with leggings. Newport-News has tons of options available from boot leg to skinny and as long as you don black and choose a full length style, either cut will have a slimming effect. The ones that are featured have the added benefit of the retailer’s “Shape FX” line as the leggings have been built for support, control and slimming your rump.

Shape fx® Push-up legging, $19-$21: Newport-News.com

A great belt will provide the final detail, but the key is getting a large enough sized accessory so it can  be worn at your hips, not at your waist. Although they are primarily known for their jeans, Lucky Brand has awesome accessories and this Ashe Belt ($69) would complete the outfit:

Ashe Belt, $69: Lucky Brand Jeans

If you choose to wear this belt at the waist, the only thing you would succeed in doing is drawing attention to your pear shaped figure. Don’t believe me? Michelle Obama recently made a mistake we can all learn by:

Michelle Obama Can’t Always Be Perfect

By moving the belt down a couple of inches, you can blouse the top, thus adding some bulk onto the narrowest part of our bodies. Plus the slimming effect of the black leggings will allow us to best mimic the style of the skinny girls, but customized for a pear shaped figure. Whether you pair this outfit with sandals in the summer or boots in the winter, you now have the inside scoop on how to wear a tunic.

Of course no look would be complete without an plug for Hurricane by Jane Jewelry and would recommended the Duotastic Necklace because the piece will add a splash of gold that would compliment the olive tone of the shirt while tying in the silver buckle of the belt:

Daytime Sequins on a Budget

November 11, 2009 at 10:24 am (Discount Shopping, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Nothing ushers in the holiday season like the light reflection of sequins. If you are like a magpie and drawn to all things shiny, then the trend of currently wearing sequins during the day must fill your heart with glee. Instyle.com already declared this move as a “New Style Rule” back in 2008, and since then every editor and retailer has embraced the trend.

If you are ready to make the move yourself, what better way to do it then by shopping with a discount code from New York and Company. Coupon code “3886” will save you 30% off of your online order (limited time) and when you spend $65 you will get free shipping.

By pairing this sequined top ($36.95) with a great pair of dark denim or trousers and topped with a fitted blazer, you can easily and respectably shimmer during business hours:

Sequined T Shirt, $36.95: New York and Company

“But wait, there’s more!”  If that shirt is not your style, another great option for getting your bling on is this embellished tunic ($29.95):

Embellished Necklace Statement Tunic, $29.95

Although I love this top, I do not think that the stylist needs to channel their inner Coco Chanel and should have heeded her advice“Take one thing off before you leave the house”. The necklace and most of the bracelets must go!  There are too many accessories and that distracts from the embellished neckline. Keeping only the black cuff (featured ) and adding a great pair of earrings will complete the look. My suggestion, the Crystal Ship in sterling silver ($41):

Crystal Ship Earrings in Sterling Silver, $41: Hurricane by Jane L.L.C.

Out of all the jewelry I have made for myself, these are the earrings that get the most use as they are big enough to make a statement, neutral because of the teardrop crystals and light enough to wear every day. Combined with any sequined top these earrings will complete the look quite elegantly.

Bloomingdale’s Discount for Pear Shapely

November 10, 2009 at 12:18 pm (Discount Shopping, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , )

New York natives and their neighboring counterparts all fondly remember their love affair with Bloomingdale’s in the 70s. The store’s history dates back to the 1800s, but during the 70s the store was a major destination for stars, fashion icons and wanna-bes from Long Island. When the disco generation was large and in charge  “Bloomies” (59th street and Lexington) was “the” place to get the look and was a necessary shopping haven for those longing to access Studio 54.

Since then, the retailer has established itself as a one stop shopping Mecca, and with coupon code “BFRIEND” you will receive a 20% discount off of qualified purchases(runs through 11/15). For extra savings, this code can be combined with markdowns and sales already in existence throughout the store and on the website.

Far be it from me to pass on the opportunity to browse a sale and pick out fabulous finds for my pear shaped bodied brethren. The store has so much to choose from including L.A.M.B., Lucky Brand, ABS by Allen Schwartz, Spanx and Alice and Olivia.Bloomingdale’ designer offerings are mind boggling to say the least and you should take the time to peruse your favorites.

Knowing that one could get 20% off and a bonus offer of a $100 gift credit for $500 spent, I would take this moment and a large hunk of my cash to get one of the great coats from Mackage. The Canadian based  design house is gifted in the art of creating stylish overcoats, perfect for cold fronts. My choice for keeping warm and showing off my rocking curves is the elegant Mackage Funnel Neck Coat with Corset Belt ($690.00).

Mackage Funnel Neck Coat with Corset Belt, $690: Bloomingdale's

No doubt, the belt is the star of the show! The coat itself is composed of a blend of wool, polyamide and cashmere. Boh the  corset belt and funnel neck serve utilitarian duty as they will minimize drafts in sensitive areas. The silhouette of this covering is reminiscent of a 1950’s party dress, the best cut for Pear Shapely as it will show off your slender top and easily accommodate your swinging hips. Finally, black is always slimming and will provide you with the most versatility in your wardrobe. Admittedly the coat is pricey, but when it comes to winter wear, the expenses is well justified.

Pear Shapely Discount Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Ruffles Away!

November 9, 2009 at 10:38 am (Discount Shopping, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines as starting November 12 for a four day period the “Gap” mothership is having their annual Give and Get discount promotion featuring 30% off your entire order (either in store or on line). Not only will you save some cash on any items purchased at the Gap, Gap Outlet, Banana Republic, Banana Republic Factory Stores and Old Navy, but the company will contribute 5% of your expenditures to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

With cooler temperatures upon us and the holiday season rearing its ugly (yet festive) head, this discount could not come at a better time. Whether you want to stock up on striped tops for your pear shaped figure , sailor pantsgreat affordable cardigans or find some new treasures perfect for adorning your goddess like curves, the bargains will be hard to resist.

Some new faves of mine include the must have styling detail of the season, ruffles. Many ladies may be intimidated from participating in this hot trend, but regardless of your age, size or shape as long as it is done correctly, you can rock the house. On the higher end of spending scale, Banana Republic has this adorable ruffled cardigan ($79.50):

Ruffled Cardigan $79.50: Banana Republic

Constructed of 100% merino wool, the sweater comes in a variety of neutrals such as Taupe, Carob Chip, Sugar Plum, Charcoal and Black. Not only will you be kept toasty warm, but you will also keep the attention on your upper torso.

Another ruffled option  include this cotton cashmere blend ruffle henley sweater from the Gap ($44.50):

Ruffle-Front Henley Sweater, $44.50: Gap

This sweater comes in full array of Roy G. Biv, the fabric is super soft, features subtle ruffles and would make an excellent layering piece.

Perhaps the other options are  “too rich for your blood” and your wallet, well thank goodness for Old Navy and this animal friendly ruffled Faux-leather hobo bag ($29.50):

Ruffled Faux Leather Hobo Bag, $29.50: Old Navy

The best thing about a great handbag and jewelry from Hurricane by Jane Jewelry is that one size fits all! Since the ruffles are the main focal point, I think some great earrings like the Moony Swingtown ($59) would compliment any of these pieces:

Nordstrom Discounts for Pear Shapely

November 5, 2009 at 10:12 am (Discount Shopping, Dresses For Pear Shaped Women, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Since it’s humble beginnings as a local shoe store in Seattle Washington, Nordstrom has evolved into a national shopping Mecca! The retailer carries labels such as Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese, BCBG, D&G and Max & Cleo and until November 15 you can stock up on your favorites as their Half-Yearly sale is in full effect. You can choose to either shop in person or shop online at Nordstrom.com.

My thinking is that the holiday season is right around the corner and surely there will be a cocktail party or two that justifies the purchase of a new dress to drape your girly curves. There are plenty of options for pear shaped figures to choose from, but for the money these are my favorites:

Adrianna Papell Gathered Cutaway Halter Dress, $98.90, Nordstrom

The Adrianna Papell Gathered Cutaway Halter Dress ($98.90) is simply gorgeous and will be easy to wear. The port color is divine and flattering to most skin tones, the A-line skirt will accommodate fuller swaying hips while the gathered neckline, halter top will tighten accordingly while accentuating our toned upper torsos.

If you are a size 10 or 12 (the only sizes currently available), don’t bat an eye or you will miss out on this great strapless cocktail dress from Shoshanna ($212):

Shoshanna Strapless Sweetheart Dress, $212: Nordstrom

Shoshanna is known for constructing tops to accommodate the “girls” and hold them in place effortlessly. Chocolate is a flattering neutral, silk and cotton taffeta is a rich fabric and the sweetheart bodice and a short A-line skirt is a classic style that will last for years to come.

Perhaps you want to wrap yourself up like a holiday gift? Then the bow detail on this Ane Klein Dress will fulfill your desire:

Anne Klein Dress, $126.90; Nordstrom

The dress comes in both navy/midnight or ruby. The cut is classic with a surplice neck, cinched waist and a full skirt, just perfect for pear shaped figures to luxuriously adorn themselves.

If you want to take advantage of this sale and get a bargain on your holiday ensemble here are some shopping tips to take advantage of the sale:

  • Keep it simple-Bejeweled, adorned or patterned dresses may be the trend, but their longevity is short lived as “hot” items become cool very quickly
  • Go for quality fabrics- Regardless of the designer label, silk and cotton are much better fabric choices the poly/spandex
  • Solid Colors- With a high quality, solid color garment you can wear your dress to a number of events and change the look with great accessories
  • Accessories- the right handbag, shoes, wraps and jewelry will complete your look and of course this is my plug for Hurricane by Jane Jewelry.

The best pieces I have for holiday dressing are the Boogie Night Necklace and Constellation Earrings.

Esprit Online Discounts for Pear Shapely

November 4, 2009 at 9:57 am (Discount Shopping, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

When I was a kid and going “back to school” was right around the corner, we would load up the family wagon and make the trip to Paramus Park Mall in New Jersey  as tax free shopping was the bait.  Over time, that rite of passage evolved to trips to outlet stores where we could scoop up savings.

When the trend first emerged, outlet stores were truly a unique and worth-while shopping experience. Now-a-days, many outlet stores are just facades for where manufactures can produce a lower price point line and sell lesser quality goods just in order to generate another revenue stream.

According to  Consumer Reports “only one-third of survey respondents said outlet prices were substantially below sale prices at regular stores.” Author Ellen Rupel Shell’s further backs up that fact in her book, Cheap: the High Cost of Discount Culture, where she reveals that many retailers such as Coach, the Gap,and  Donna Karan produce lower-quality merchandise specifically for their outlets.

That does not mean all is lost for those dedicated to discount shopping as there are plenty of affordable and adorable options to be found around the web. Right now Esprit.com there is a major “outlet” clearance sale going on where some online exclusives and earlier season overstock is on sale for up to 70% off. To qualify for free shipping you need to spend $30.

From great bolero cropped tops to flowing tunics like this gorgeous printed chiffon tunic ($14.99) there are plenty of great bargains for pear shaped bodies:

Printed Chiffon Tunic, $14.99, Esprit

Use this retro inspired topper to dress up a pair of dark, sleek skinny jeans and you will draw the eye’s attention up and highlight your middle with the synch waist detail.

Of course, no look would be complete without some dazzling jewelry from Hurricane by Jane . My recommendation is the ever popular and best selling Triple Strand in Sterling Silver ($42):

Michelle Obama: Fashion Icon and Pear Shapely Role Model

November 3, 2009 at 10:44 am (Celebrity Style, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Just Because, Media Sources, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , )

What a difference a year can make. Bad hair cuts can seem to mend themselves, pounds can be gained and lost, and the First Lady has established herself as a style icon. The best thing about Michelle Obama are her curves and the fact that she is a tried and true Pear Shapely kind of gal. Yes she is fit. Yes, her arms are worthy of praise. And, oh yes, her hips are bigger proportionally then her upper torso.

Harper’s Bazaar is currently paying homage to our luscious first lady by highlighting her fashion accomplishments for the past year. She knows how to rock her figure by highlighting her curves with a great synch belt and by wearing appropriate shapes for her figure:

Michelle Obama Pear Shaped Figure

She knows how to drape her figure for any occasion:

and in general, she is a healthy role model for women of all shapes, sizes and colors.

This First Lady certainly seems to have it all. The only thing that appears to be missing from her life is some great jewelry from Hurricane by Jane. I’m sure if she were to know about little ol’ me, she would choose some pieces that were unique and shimmering from the Icicle Collection (Necklace $92 and Earrings $52).

Icicle Hoop Earrings $52: Hurricane by Jane

Why wait until she takes the plunge? Be ahead of the fashion pack and buy yours now! If you are interested in the complete set feel free to contact me directly at hurricanebyjane@gmail.com and I’ll make you and offer you can’t refuse.

Newport-News Discount for Pear Shapely

October 29, 2009 at 9:00 am (Discount Shopping, Hurricane by Jane Jewelry, Pear Shaped Fashion Finds) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , )

Everyone makes mistakes and retailer Newport-News is no exception to the rule. Apparently they had some site issues yesterday due to the “launch of our New Holiday 2009 Collection.” Their error is providing shoppers with a 20% discount off of purchases today only, just by entering the discount code “560” during the checkout process.

Some great items that can certainly benefit a Pear Shapely gal included nearly anything from the Shape FX collection. All the garments under this “collection” are built to slim, shape and lift a slew of body parts. There are both undergarments and clothing items that follow the latest fashion trends while working with our figures. If you have been wanting to jump on the legging bandwagon, a boot leg fit with control will help you ease into the craze ($29-$32):

Shape fx® Control bootcut leggings: Newport-News

Not sure how to wear them? Oversized cardigans like the one I spotted the other day from the I ‘Heart’ Ronson line at J.C. Penney’s would be a perfect match.

If you are already sporting visions of “sugarplums dancing in your head,” then holiday dressing may be at the top of your mind. What better way to get your spirit on then with a little bling courtesy of this sequined tank now on sale for $35.

Sequin Tank $35, Newport-News

This top can be coupled with your favorite pair of jeans, a simple skirt or even the aforementioned leggings. With all the savings this tip has just provided you, make sure to top of your holiday look with the infamous Constellation Earrings ($57) from Hurricane by Jane Jewelry.

Constellation Earrings, $57: Hurricane by Jane Jewelry

Shopping Tip: When shopping on Newport-News I have found that it is very important to check the fabric description to avoid purchasing an item that looks inferior and double check the sizing information as their shipping fees are costly.
