How to Wear a Tunic: Advice for Pear Shaped Figures

I’ve always envied women who can slip on a tunic, wear it as a mini dress and show off their great gams. Alas, I am not one of those ladies as my legs are the last feature I am willing to display in a public setting.

But that does not stop my love for the garb and my passion for finding options that will flatter my figure. By  the definition on Dictionary.com a tunic is a “a woman’s upper garment, either loose or close-fitting and extending over the skirt to the hips or below.” Ultimately the cut of the garment plays against our natural shape as it may get stuck on our hips and not show our delicate waistlines unless it is accessorized and styled properly.

Luckily there are ways to tweak the top that will allow us to still don a tunic stylishly. The ingredients for this style recipe include a tunic, leggings and a great, bold belt. Are you having trouble picturing this look? Let me make it simple. For the tunic you can choose any color, pattern or embellishment you want as long as the main details appear on your upper torso, not on your hips. This top from Black Hearts Brigade ($54 Bluefly.com) will do the trick:

The shape is boxy, but the cut is full enough to cover our shapely rears and accommodate all our curves while channelling a “rocker” vibe.

Step number two for the ensemble is pair it with leggings. Newport-News has tons of options available from boot leg to skinny and as long as you don black and choose a full length style, either cut will have a slimming effect. The ones that are featured have the added benefit of the retailer’s “Shape FX” line as the leggings have been built for support, control and slimming your rump.

A great belt will provide the final detail, but the key is getting a large enough sized accessory so it can  be worn at your hips, not at your waist. Although they are primarily known for their jeans, Lucky Brand has awesome accessories and this Ashe Belt ($69) would complete the outfit:

If you choose to wear this belt at the waist, the only thing you would succeed in doing is drawing attention to your pear shaped figure. Don’t believe me? Michelle Obama recently made a mistake we can all learn by:

By moving the belt down a couple of inches, you can blouse the top, thus adding some bulk onto the narrowest part of our bodies. Plus the slimming effect of the black leggings will allow us to best mimic the style of the skinny girls, but customized for a pear shaped figure. Whether you pair this outfit with sandals in the summer or boots in the winter, you now have the inside scoop on how to wear a tunic.

Of course no look would be complete without an plug for Hurricane by Jane Jewelry and would recommended the Duotastic Necklace because the piece will add a splash of gold that would compliment the olive tone of the shirt while tying in the silver buckle of the belt:
